Hospitals & Nursing Home Safety
Protect Our Vulnerable Population
Hospitals and nursing homes are designed to serve as residences and safe havens for the most vulnerable and at-risk members of our community. It is the trusted duty of all staff, workers, and visitors to help protect their patients and residents. Here are some helpful tips for promoting safety in hospitals and nursing homes.Â
- Promote smoking regulations for the building—and equip any designated smoking areas with large, frequently trained ashtrays
- Never allow smoking in any area where oxygen equipment is used—and post signs that are visible to staff, patients, residents, and visitors
- Never allow open flames in the building
- Do not overload electrical outlets
- Check cords on all appliances—and replace them if they’re cracked or frayed
- Keep all areas of the building free and clear of trash and wasteÂ
- Be aware of unauthorized people, especially in restricted areas
- Conduct, practice, and participate in emergency procedures during regular fire drills
- Know the location of all fire alarm pull stations
- Know how to shut off piped systems that supply oxygen and gas
- Learn how to operate a fire extinguisherÂ
- Properly store and secure all gas cylinders
